This Plating sponge gets it’s main source of energy from light. no need to feed it anything special.
Other elements taken from the water include silicate, which otherwise will fuel diatoms and algae, and some phosphate which also fuels algae.
A lesser known fact about this coral is that it has the ability to mitigate red slime/Cyanobacteria in your aquarium. The spong harbors cyanobacteria in its cells. similar to the symbiosis of coral and zooxanthelle.
That means, the cyano will preferentially reside inside of the sponge, where it is not as exposed, and the sponge benefits from the byproducts of the cyanobacteria.
This sponge can be very prolific, and spread all over a tank if you are not careful. Red Slime remover produccts will kill this sponge very easily, and are not recommended to use, unless you understand that risk.
